At Hurden Looker Elementary School, Ms. Craig's 6th-grade students invited Mrs. Lorelli’s 2nd-grade class to attend their Math Carnival! They had math game stations set up and Mrs. Lorelli’s students had to visit each station, play a math game, and they got to receive a prize ticket. Ms. Crisanaz’s class from Hurden Looker Elementary School won the Federal Court essay contest on the importance of a jury trial in America! The class was invited to the Federal Courthouse in Newark on May 2nd, 2024. The class received a tour of Magistrate Judge Almonte's courtroom! Students met and spoke with Judge Almonte and Judge Farbiarz, received a certificate for their achievement, and a demonstration from the Federal Marshall Service! Lunch was provided to our students as well. On Thursday, March 21st, the ESL Department, led by Supervisor Evelyn Okparaeke, in collaboration with Ola Edwards Vice Principal, Azure Diggs and Math Supervisor, Rita Della Valle, hosted a ESL Parent Resource Night for Grades 2-6 to engage and inform parents of the resources available for their children specific to their English language needs. This event would not be possible without the dedicated teachers of Ola Edwards, Ms. Altenor, Mrs. Huynh, Ms. Rosamalia, and ESL teacher at Hurden Looker, Mrs. DeJesus who volunteered their time to teach parents about the valuable resources available to our multilingual learners both at school and at home. Special shoutout to Custodian Sunny and Security Guard Mel for all their assistance and to Maschio’s for providing food and refreshments. Being multilingual is a superpower and at Hillside Public Schools we celebrate and honor the diversity of all our students!
